Disability Access and Inclusion Plan adopted
Our Disability Access and Inclusion Plan has been adopted! The plan outlines our commitment to being an inclusive and accessible city.
The plan builds on the success of previous plans and outlines how the organisation will continue to improve access to Council facilities and services, as well as advocating for improvements across the city.
Take a look at the plan below to see what we are focusing on over the next 3 years to continue creating a city for everyone in our community.
The NSW Disability Inclusion Act (2014) requires all NSW Councils to develop a Disability Inclusion Plan.
We have developed a Disability Access and Inclusion Plan to ensure that our plan responds to matters of access and inclusion.
The Plan will help us continue to work together to make Shellharbour City a place where people with disabilities and their families are able to live, work and play as equals.
The previous Disability Access and Inclusion Plan: An Inclusive City – 2017-22 was established in 2017 In partnership with the Disability Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee and the community of Shellharbour. Since creating the current plan Shellharbour has seen many wins for the community and particularly people whose lives are directly impacted by the goals of the plan.
Some of the highlights include:
- Short Stories Project "Not all Disabilities are Visible".
- Mobi Matting made available at Shellharbour North Beach.
- Beach Wheelchairs available from Shellharbour North Beach and Warilla Beach.
- All public accessible toilets were fitted with a Master Locksmith Access Key (MLAK) and listed on the National Public Toilet Map (NPTM).
- All new or renewed playgrounds now include at least one inclusive element.
- RECHARGE Points (for mobility scooters) are now available at the Civic Centre and Warilla Library.
- Increasingly considering Access and Inclusion in Council's plans, policies and other documents.
The focus areas identified in the plan are:
- Developing positive community attitudes and behaviors.
- Creating accessible and liveable communities.
- Supporting access to meaningful employment.
- Improving access to services through better systems and practices.
