About the project
Shellharbour City Council is committed to supporting community health and looking after our shared outdoor spaces. This draft policy aims to reduce exposure to second-hand smoke and vaping in public places, while keeping our parks, beaches and facilities clean and enjoyable for everyone.
Smoking is already restricted in many outdoor areas under NSW legislation. This revised draft Smoke-Free Outdoor Areas Policy 2025 builds on those existing rules by proposing additional smoke-free areas on Council-owned land.
The policy focuses on places where people gather, exercise, play and relax, particularly areas used by children, families and the wider community. It also aims to reduce cigarette butt and e-cigarette waste, which can impact the environment, waterways and wildlife.
The policy is currently on public exhibition, and Council is seeking community feedback to help understand whether the proposed areas are appropriate and how the policy could be implemented in a fair and practical way.
