We want to hear from you!

The COVID-19 Pandemic has disrupted lives across the world, we have all had to make changes. We would like to hear from you about the future planning of the Regional NAIDOC Awards event.

About the NAIDOC Regional Awards

The Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards is a collaborative event that is organised by Shellharbour, Wollongong, Shoalhaven and Kiama City Councils.

Over the past 10 years over 1,000 guests have come together to recognise the outstanding contributions that indigenous Australians make in our local communities. Each year nominations are received across 5 awards categories;

  • Aboriginal Elder of the Year (Male and Female)
  • Aboriginal Community Representative of the Year
  • Aboriginal Young Achiever of the Year (Male and Female)
  • Aboriginal Community Volunteer of the Year
  • Outstanding Contribution to Reconciliation (Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal)

Each year we try to deliver a unique and memorable event. Your feedback from past events has shown that you'd like to see:

  • A mix of local talent, young performer and cultural performances
  • Time for yarning, catching up
  • Good access for Elders at a venue that's easy to get around
  • Simple tasty food
  • Funny and appropriate MC

Planning a COVID-Safe event

The Regional NAIDOC Awards Committee made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 Regional NAIDOC Awards Ceremony due to the impacts of COVID-19.

Any events we plan from now on must have a COVID Safety Plan and consider the following guidelines from NSW Health:

  • One person per 2 square meters
  • Physical distancing
  • Guests must be seated
  • Face masks optional

These guidelines are subject to change at any time.

The Committee has started to plan the 2021 awards and would like to hear your feedback about what you would like to see in future events that celebrate NAIDOC. This means following COVID Safe measures.
