FAQs
Shellharbour's Destination Management Plan (DMP) is a strategic tool designed to balance tourism growth with the preservation of the city's unique character and quality of life, ensuring long-term benefits for both residents and visitors. The plan seeks to:
- Promote a growing visitor economy that is economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable.
- Increase the profile and awareness of Shellharbour City.
- Develop quality attractions, experiences, and activities for both visitors and residents.
Effectively leverage emerging tourism opportunities.
Shellharbour’s previous DMP (2018–2022) has guided our growth in tourism and is now due for renewal. Building on that foundation, the new DMP will align with Shellharbour’s Community Strategic Plan (CSP), Destination Sydney Surrounds South’s DMP, and Destination NSW’s Visitor Economy Strategy 2035. Together, these frameworks will help position Shellharbour as a leading destination in the region.
Council’s role in tourism is delivered through Destination Shellharbour, the tourism branch of Shellharbour City Council. We provide support, advocacy, marketing and promotion, industry networking, communications and visitor information for locals, visitors and tourism operators. We also work with nearby councils, Destination Sydney Surrounds South and Destination NSW to promote the wider Illawarra and South Coast regions.
Community and stakeholder input is vital. Your feedback will shape priorities, refine actions and ensure the DMP reflects local needs and aspirations, guiding decisions on tourism development and investment.
Yes, the DMP can have implications for your business, especially if you are involved in the tourism, hospitality, or retail sectors. The plan outlines strategies for marketing, infrastructure development and visitor experience enhancement, which can create new opportunities for local businesses. Engaging with the DMP allows businesses to align with the city's tourism objectives and benefit from coordinated promotional efforts.
Feedback collected from stakeholders and the community is integral to the DMP's development and implementation. Shellharbour City Council uses this input to:
- Refine strategic priorities and actions within the plan.
- Ensure that the DMP reflects the needs and aspirations of the community.
- Inform decision-making processes related to tourism development and infrastructure investments.
Shellharbour City Council adheres to strict privacy and confidentiality policies when handling personal information.
