When we checked in with you, you told us you’d love to see our main street become more vibrant, welcoming, and green with more seating, shade, and spaces to relax and connect.

We’re now exploring ways to make Addison Street, the heart of Shellharbour Village, more vibrant, accessible, and enjoyable for everyone.

This project will look at how the street looks, feels, and functions supporting local businesses, pedestrians, residents, and visitors while keeping the relaxed coastal character we all love.

What is a streetscape?

A streetscape includes everything you see and experience from one side of the street to the other the road, footpaths, trees, lighting, seating, and the activity in between.

It’s where people walk, shop, meet friends, grab a coffee, and connect with the community.
A great streetscape balances Place (a space to enjoy and relax) and Movement (a space to move safely, whether walking, cycling, driving, or catching public transport). When these come together, streets become lively, welcoming, and easy to enjoy.

What could it look like?

Here are some of the key design ideas that could shape the future of Addison Street:

  • More trees and planting – shade, colour and character
  • Wider footpaths – more space for walking and outdoor dining
  • Places to sit and rest – making the street more comfortable
  • Narrower traffic lanes – to slow cars and make crossings safer
  • Raised pedestrian crossings – for safety and accessibility
  • Better lighting – to make the street feel safe and welcoming at night
Before After

The NSW Government calls Addison Street a Destination Main Street and it is the heart of Shellharbour Village. That means it’s more than a road it’s a community hub that brings people together and supports local shops, cafes, and visitors.

This work builds on the Shellharbour Village Town Centre Plan (2014), which identified Addison Street as the 'main street' and set the vision for a more people-friendly space.

That plan focused on:

  • Better walkability and safer crossings
  • More outdoor dining and shopfront activation
  • Stronger links to the foreshore
  • More greenery, lighting, and seating

Destination Main Streets are designed to:

  • Prioritise walking, cycling and public transport
  • Support local business and community events
  • Create shaded, attractive public spaces
  • Encourage slower traffic and safer crossings
