🌊 Responding to community feedback, Council resolved last night not to proceed with the Waterfront Centre at Location A in Shell Cove.

We’ll now explore alternative locations that better meet current and future community needs.

The land Council owns in Shell Cove is currently classified as operational (similar to many other parcels of land Council owns in Shell Cove). It has always been intended that land for community use in Shell Cove would be reclassified as community land for community benefit at the end of the project. Last night, all Councillors supported this direction.

To classify or re-classify land, we must follow the statutory process required under the Local Government Act which includes a mandatory 28-day public notification period. Council cannot allow any motion that would seek to circumvent its legal requirements under the Local Government Act.

While Councillors unanimously supported the use of the land as community space, the Local Government system is established so that no Council of the day can make decisions on behalf of future Council’s that are yet to be democratically elected.
