History
A little history of the area
Russell Street, Albion Park has a long connection to the area’s early development.
The street is named after John Russell, a long‑time local landholder who retired to Albion Park after farming at Croom. His former home later became part of the Albion Park shopping area. The Russell Estate, mapped in 1916, played a key role in shaping the local street layout we know today.
Earlier records show Russell Street was once known as Crome (Croom) Street, reflecting its links to surrounding rural land and early farming history. Historic photographs and aerial images from the late 1800s through to the 1980s show how the crossroads at Albion Park gradually transformed from a small rural centre into the township hub it is today including the growth of shops, schools, sporting fields and community facilities around Russell Street.
Nearby, local residents such as Lewis Stubbs, born in 1907 in Albion Park, lived through this period of change, helping to shape the strong community identity that remains today.
Naming the laneway provides a chance to reflect this rich local history and continue celebrating Albion Park’s evolving story.
