The upgrades, which began in mid-September and have been completed on schedule, were funded by the NSW Government’s Towards Zero Safer Roads Program.

“Terry Street is now safer, more efficient, and more inclusive with these new vital upgrades,” Shellharbour City Mayor Chris Homer said.

The improvements targeted the historically high-risk area between Wiley Street and Simpson Parade, which also sees significant pedestrian activity.

The project was developed in close consultation with the community with more than 100 contributions shaping the final design.

“We’ve delivered a project that reflects the needs and priorities of our community, with local drivers, pedestrians and the surrounding businesses all benefiting from these safety enhancements to the area,” Mayor Homer said.

“This project marks a significant achievement for our city and serves as a great example of how we can create meaningful positive change when we work together with the community.”

Key safety benefits of the completed upgrades include:

  • A new of a roundabout at the T-intersection of Terry Street and Hughes Drive
  • One-way traffic flow within the shopping car park
  • A new raised pedestrian crossing at Wiley Street
  • New disability compliant infrastructure
  • Shared use path links to each of the upgraded crossing points
  • Left-turn only restrictions on selected side roads
  • Relocated bus shelter

Member for Kiama, Katelin McInerny said:

“Road safety is a top priority for the Minns Labor Government.

“This project is a great win for pedestrians, local shoppers and families who rely on Terry Street every day.

"The upgraded crossings, footpaths and traffic flow improvements will make a real difference to how people move around Albion Park.

“Our Government is focused on safer roads for every community. These upgrades at Terry Street respond directly to what locals have been asking for and will help reduce risk in an area that has seen too many close calls.

“Whether you’re walking the kids to school, crossing to the shops or driving through Albion Park, the improvements on Terry Street will make your day a little easier and a lot safer. This is practical change delivered for the community.”
