Shellharbour City Council continues work on the Yellow Rock Road Upgrade in Tullimbar. The works are approaching 50% completion, with the majority of drainage and utility work completed from the Illawarra Highway to Araluen Terrace.

The project is supported by fundings from Council and the Australian Government through the Safer Local Roads and Infrastructure Program with additional support from the Roads to Recovery Program.

The upgraded road is starting to take shape with the key objectives of the project including:

  • Kerb, gutter and stormwater improvements
  • Improved pedestrian paths and crossings
  • Wider road pavement including improved on-street parking opportunity and accessibility
  • New road pavement and upgraded intersections at Wongawilli Street and Hereford Chase

As the works progress, representatives from Cleary Bros. will continue to be in touch with our directly impacted residents to advise on temporary restrictions for property access for road pavement improvement.

Additional subgrade pavement improvement works identified during construction will be incorporated into the project, with the main construction works now expected to continue through to October 2026. While this has slightly extended the project timeline, avoiding the full road closures originally anticipated has allowed traffic to be maintained for most of the construction period. Some temporary road closures may still be required to complete utility works and intersection upgrades.

The project has commenced works between the Illawarra Highway and Hereford Chase, over the next 6-8 weeks, light vehicles are encouraged to utilise Broughton Avenue and Wongawilli Street to prevent banked traffic at the Illawarra Highway roundabout connection.

Council and Cleary Bros. continue to monitor noise and dust generating activities during the works to ensure controls and levels are acceptable with the approvals in place for the project.

The planned activities over the next four to six weeks cover:

  • Finalisation of drainage and utility works across the entire project area
  • Pavement improvement and expansion works between the Illawarra Highway and Wongawilli Street
  • Kerb and gutter installation for the expanded pavement widths

Asphalting works are scheduled towards the end of the project to limit the amount of disruption to residents and the community. During the asphalting works, large sections of the road will be closed. This ensures the most efficient and highest quality finishing for the road surface. Cleary Bros. will be in contact with residents with plenty of notice prior to commencement of these works.

Council would like to thank residents and the broader community for supporting these works and travelling safely through the active construction zones as Cleary Bros. continue to deliver these important road upgrades for the future.
